Škampa String Quartet
At this year’s PROMS the St. Agnes Monastery in the Old Town will play host to an ensemble which has been around since 1989 having garnered success at competitions all over the world since that time. They’ve also delivered a great many top performances and excellent recordings including “Best Debut” Royal Philharmonic Society Award for their exceptional performance at London’s Wigmore Hall in 1993, plus several “Harmony Awards for Best Recording," which the quartet picked up for a CD featuring the Janáček and Smetana Quartets. The Škampa Quartet does not shy away from venturing beyond the imaginary boundaries of classical music. Proof of this is can be heard in the "Iva Bittová Classic" album where the musicians masterfully combine hints of Roma, Moravian folk music and jazz.
Education has long been an important facet of their work, and one that they find particularly rewarding. Examples of this include master classes for Wigmore Hall Concertgebow Amsterdam, the University of Mexico City plus other institutes and music festivals, though the main bulk of their teaching takes place at the London Royal Academy of Music where they were appointed Visiting Professors of Chamber Music in the strings department in 2001.
